Quick Roof Measurements for Professional Tarping

Every Spring brings high winds and rain to large swaths of the country. In 2021 however, the south has seen a one-two punch of extreme winter weather and tornadic activity within just weeks of each other. Other parts of the country are not immune from this weather either, and material prices are soaring all over the country.

All of that adds up to serious strains on roofing companies, and long waits for customers. As customers wait for roof replacements, they’re going to need coverage for their damaged and leaking roofs. This week, we’ll look at how you can use RoofSnap to quickly measure and estimate a tarping job, so you can serve homeowners in your community faster.

Measuring the Damaged Roof Facet

Damaged Facet

For this example, we’ve chosen a property where the “leak area” is clearly visible in our imagery. Most properties that you’ll be called to tarp will have more recent damage, and may not have been covered by imagery providers. If you’re unsure of where the damaged section of the roof lies, you’ll want to tarp the entire roof plane, or facet, to ensure coverage until a roof-replacement can be scheduled.

Measure the damaged roof facet by drawing the perimeter with four clicks.

With RoofSnap, measuring the entire roof plane takes four mouse-clicks. With that, you have the linear measurements you’ll need to order your tarp. This roof plane measures 12ft by 30ft, and the general rule of thumb is to add 4ft to every side to allow room to wrap your tarp weights.

Building The Tarping Quote

Many roofing contractors may not tarp enough to have a per-square quote ready for tarping, but RoofSnap’s estimation platform can build a quote for any job. For this project, we’ll add custom items for our tarp and 2×4 lumber weights, as well as a steep charge and labor.

With RoofSnap’s custom line-items, we can set the price of each item when we add it to the estimate, so no matter what our supplier is charging for our tarp and lumber at the time, we can adjust our price accordingly. Voila! Our estimate is done.

Sharing the Quote with the Homeowner

Now that we’ve built our estimate, we can generate a professional document to send over to the homeowner. RoofSnap’s documents are pre-built, so with one click, we have a PDF estimate that includes the image of the property, all of the property’s information, and our pricing is broken out to include the subtotal and any applicable taxes.

Since this document is a PDF, you can print it and hand it off to the homeowner, or send it as an attachment to a text message or email. RoofSnap also has customizable roofing contracts that you can have customers sign on your tablet or mobile device. (Learn even more about this here.)

If getting quick measurements for tarping seemed easy with RoofSnap, you should know that the process also takes just minutes. In an environment where speed is of the essence to serve the most customers and prevent additional damage from leaks, it’s vital to move quickly.
